Science 4 Everybody

Here I articulate some of my ambitions in a movement I call “Science for Everybody.”

I encapsulate many of these ambitions in a new initiative that I am founding director of: the Yale Initiative for Science and Society.

The mission to build a society that can interpret and appreciate the process of science qualifies as the Manhattan Project of our time, and is critical to securing the longtime survival of basic science. The year 2025 has sparked deep reflection across many corners of the academic science world. Among the most pressing concerns is the relationship between science and the society in which it is embedded, including the public that both supports and benefits from scientific discovery.

Activities include:

  1. Developing original scientific programming aimed at engaging the broader public, with an emphasis on the New Haven community
  2. Conducting original research in contemporary areas that apply quantitative reasoning to social and cultural questions in science
  3. Offering formal education and training focused on the science-society interface
